Hasti Masihay Akbar

MD, MSc epidemiology 

Hasti is a Research Assistant at the Built Environment and Healthy Living Lab. She completed MSc in Epidemiology at the University of Calgary, where she investigated relationship between the built environment and physical activity patterns among Canadian-born and immigrant populations. Before commencing her MSc, Hasti worked as a general physician in Iran, where she also conducted research on social determinants of health in urban populations. In her role at the BHHL lab, Hasti contributes to projects exploring the relationship between the built environment and health outcomes, with a particular focus on physical activity and body composition. Her work includes conducting statistical analyses, managing datasets, and preparing findings for publication and presentation. Currently, Hasti also serves as an Analyst at the Prairie Regional Research Data Centre, Statistics Canada, where she specializes in confidentiality vetting and supports researchers with data-related inquiries.

Justin Eng

BHSc (Hons) health and society

Justin is currently a fourth-year undergraduate student in the BHSc (Hons) Health
and Society program. His research has involved analyzing internet social media
platforms on user’s perspectives of quality and placemaking in the Calgary Plus-15
Skywalk system, as well as assessing the relationship between neighbourhood
walkability, place attachment, and physical activity in Calgary. Justin is expected to
complete his undergraduate studies in the spring of 2025, where he is expected to
continue with further studies in graduate school. Justin also has interests and
experience in areas of history, architecture, urban planning, political science, and
gerontology.

Levi Frehlich

PhD epidemiology, MSc population/public health, BSc (Hons) kinesiology

Levi Frehlich holds a BSc (Hons) in Kinesiology, during which he researched the dietary patterns of undergraduate students. He went on to earn an MSc in Population/Public Health, where he developed a tool to measure neighbourhood-based physical activity. Levi completed his academic journey with a PhD in Epidemiology, exploring the relationship between the built environment and health-related fitness. Additionally, Levi is a Co-Principal Investigator on the Makoyoh’sokoi program, a wholistic, culturally relevant wellness initiative for Indigenous women in urban, rural, and remote communities. He has also served as Co-President for the Calgary Chapter of Obesity Canada and founded the Calgary Student and New Professional Chapter of Obesity Canada. Currently, Levi is the Research Director for the Alberta Kinesiology Association and a member of the Stanford Lifestyle Medicine Program. Beyond these roles, Levi runs Luxury Nutrition and Fitness, a health blog dedicated to sharing research on physical activity, nutrition, and health.

Sam Vukadinovic

BHSc health & society

Sam is currently completing a BHSc in Health and Society with a concentration in Political Science at the University of Calgary. As a part of her degree, she is working on a practicum project that explores the built environment of Calgary’s Plus-15, focusing on its design, accessibility, and potential impacts on population health and well-being. Outside of her academic pursuits, Sam is passionate about her work with BC Wildfire during the summer, where she works as an Initial Attack crew member. In this role, she has developed skills in wildfire suppression tactics, chainsaw operation, and emergency response. In her spare time, Sam enjoys spending time outdoors and staying active through hiking and running.
